Today’s environment is a sea change from what it was a few decades ago. Luxury homes at astronomical prices are today being constructed in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru and are still finding many takers, which would have been unthinkable a few years ago. Only a few weeks ago, a property in a prime location in Mumbai went for as high as 118,000 per sq ft, reinforcing the perception that downturns don’t matter where wealth is concerned and where there is material desire .Domestic economic conditions remain dreary but India’s ultra high net worth individuals (ultra HNIs) are getting richer and many more are joining the exclusive club. Ultra high net worth household (ultra HNH)are defined as one having a minimum average net worth of Rs 250 million essentially accumulated over the past 10 years, which as per CRISIL’s proprietary tool IDeA (Income and Demographics Analysis) gets mapped to a minimum income of Rs 35 to 40 million. According to Forbes magazine, the number of Indian billionaires has gone up by 7, from 48 in 2012 to 55 in 2013. Over the next few years, ultra high net worth households (ultra HNHs) in the country are expected to more than triple to over 329,000 households

A deep knowledge of ultra HNI behaviour is a prerequisite for both wealth managers and luxury brand companies to grow their relationships and expand their businesses hence the report. Kotak and CRISIL recently launched a report, Top of the Pyramid 2013,that’s filled with interesting, reliable insights about the lifestyles, choices, investment, and spending patterns of the ultra High Net-worth Individuals in India. They had done similar exercise in 2012.  Kotak Wealth Management is a leader in the private banking space catering to 43 per cent of the 100 most wealthy (as per the Forbes India Rich List – 2012) in India. CRISIL Research is India’s largest independent research house, providing comprehensive research coverage to more than 1,200 Indian and global customers. The Top of the Pyramid 2013 report is available as iPad app at http://bit.ly/1gvpRYI, can also be downloaded, free of cost at http://bit.ly/130jqcD.
