Amazon vs Flipkart vs SnapDeal

Coming up with the best deals and offers to take the number 1 e-commerce position, Flipkart, Amazon, and Snapdeal took Diwali sales to a whole new level. In the Pre-Diwali sales, Flipkart has managed to retain its top position. Also, the combined sales of all the three e-commerce entities were calculated at around Rs 6,500 crore which is up by 20% over the previous year as per Financial Express report.

Flipkart said it sold 15.5 million units during its five-day sale, striding past closest rival Amazon which said it clocked sales of 15 million units. Smartphones and televisions helped boost the value of goods sold by Flipkart to $500 million in contrast with Amazon which also sold large amounts of daily consumables, including detergents, spices and groceries. Analysts believe that Flipkart has proved that it still has “an edge” over Amazon India with this sale.

As per the data stated by companies, online retail has penetrated into smaller Indian cities after many attempts to grow the business there.  The number new clients increased five-fold over last Diwali with 70% of new shoppers coming from tier 2 and tier 3 towns. For the company, almost 65% of the Amazon’s orders come from towns categorized as tier II and below. Rival Flipkart says sales from tier II and below cities went up to 42% and 34% from the last year. However, the market expansion due to new shoppers is still limited as a huge part of the sales during the festivity comes from the incremental wallet of the existing buyers.

Since there is little differentiation or customer loyalty, only one thing matters—discounts. For the most part at least. Which in turn boils down to “who has more money to give away”. It will be interesting to see how the e-commerce battle shapes up. As consumers, we can make the best of the big sales being run by online retailers. The sale will last only till the money lasts. Or, as retailers like to say, “only till stocks last”. Would people in India pay for convenience? In the US, Prime was launched in 2005, a decade after Amazon began operations. In India, it took three years. Have you gone for paid membership for faster delivery ? Do you think it’s worth it.
