The Indian rupee (sign: ₹; currency code: INR) is the official currency of India. The rupee is subdivided into 100 paise. The issuance of the currency is controlled by the Reserve Bank of India.
Today, Banknotes in circulation are of Rs 10, Rs 20, Rs 50, Rs 100, Rs 200, Rs 500 and Rs 2000. Also coins of 1, 2 and 5 rupees are in circulation.
Indian Notes have two sides. Indian notes show the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi on the front & hence is called as Mahatma Gandhi series. The side which has the face of Mahatma Gandhi is called as Obverse and the other side is called Reverse. The pictures on the back of Indian notes reflect our culture, our history, our progress.

- On the obverse or front, the denomination is written in English and Hindi.
- On the reverse is a language panel which displays the denomination of the note in 15 of the 22 official languages of India.
Interesting Fact: The highest denomination note ever printed by the Reserve Bank of India was the ₹ 10,000(Ten thousand rupee) note in 1938 and again in 1954. These notes were demonetized in 1946 and again in 1978.
