What is Linking of Bank account to Aadhaar?
You have to link Aadhaar with all your Bank accounts by 31 Dec 2017. The Centre had on October 25 told the top court that the deadline for mandatory linking of Aadhaar to receive benefits of government schemes has been extended till March 31, 2018 for those who do not have the 12-digit unique biometric identification number and were willing to enroll for it.
The Prevention of Money Laundering (Maintenance of Records) Act, 2005 (PML Act 2005), has been amended with effect from June 1, 2017 to require Aadhaar for every bank account. The customer, who has not been assigned Aadhaar number as yet, needs to submit the proof of application towards enrollment for Aadhaar to the Bank.
On 21 Oct 2017 RBI has clarified that as per the amendment in the PMLA rules by the Government all bank accounts should be linked with Aadhaar by Dec 31, 2017; failing to adhere with the accounts will become inoperative till the time the Aadhaar number is submitted and linked to the accounts. Banks are not opening new accounts without Aadhaar and have been giving constant reminders to those who still haven’t linked their accounts with the 12-digit biometric number.The linking of 12-digit biometric number to the accounts is considered mandatory for firms, companies, associations and definitely individuals. Though the final word from Supreme Court is still pending, it is expected to be on the same lines.
This mandate is NOT applicable to customers holding NRI accounts, small savings accounts or residing in Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu & Kashmir.

What happens if you do not link Aadhaar to the bank account?
Until the deadline, your bank account cannot be made non-operational if Aadhaar is not linked to your bank account.
After the deadline, the bank accounts that will not be linked to the Aadhaar number will be ceased operationally. This means that you won’t be able to withdraw cash from your bank account or even use your Debit Card. prior to this deadline,
Once blocked, can the accounts be reopened? Yes, if a customer’s account has been blocked due to non-submission of the Aadhaar then it can be unblocked if the person submits his Aadhaar number.
Not all types of bank accounts will become un-operational if they are not linked with Aadhaar before the deadline. Small accounts are exempt from this directive as these can be opened even without Aadhaar. A small account is a bank saving account where:
- The sum of all credits in a financial year does not exceed Rs 1 lakh
- The sum of all withdrawals and transfers in a month does not exceed Rs 10, 000
- The balance at any point in time does not exceed Rs 50, 000.
How to link Aadhaar to bank account online
Most of the banks offer its customers a facility to link their Aadhaar with the bank account online. One can login on the bank’s website. Once logged in, the customer can access the link ‘Link your Aadhaar number’ under the ‘My Accounts’ section appearing on the left panel of the screen.
- Once you are logged in, find link that says Link your Aadhaar number, Update Aadhaar Card Details or Aadhaar Card Seeding For example for SBI look for My Accounts and then Link your Aadhaar number.
- Click on the link to open up other page
- Enter the Aaadhaar details in the respective fields
- Click on Submit button
- You will get SMS/email regarding the status of the seeding.
How to link bank account with Aadhaar via ATM
Banks like SBI and Axis bank are allowing one to link bank account with Aadhaar through their ATM.
- Swipe your ATM card and enter PIN
- After entering PIN, one needs to select Aadhaar Registration. For SBI it’s under the option ‘Registration’ under ‘ Service’ tab. For Axis Bank click the Link Aadhaar
- Enter the Aadhaar number
- Re-enter the Aadhaar number.
- Confirm
- You will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number regarding the status of the seeding.
How to Linking Aadhaar with Bank account offline or by visiting the branch.
- Visit any bank branch with a copy of your Aadhaar number and original Aadhaar card.
- Fill in the ‘Letter of Request’ or Aadhaar linking form
- Submit the application form enclosed with photocopy of Aadhaar to the bank official
- Bank official might want to take a look at your original Aadhaar card
- The official will keep the application form for further verification
- Once the details will be verified, you will be notified
- You will receive an SMS on your registered mobile number regarding the status of the seeding.

How to check if Aadhaar is linked to bank account online
To check if Aadhaar is linked to bank account your mobile number must be registered with your Aadhaar.
If you have multiple bank accounts and you have linked Aadhaar to all the accounts, it will not be shown on the Aadhar UIDAI website. Only the last bank account mapped-in with your Aadhaar number will be displayed here.
- Visit the UIDAI website uidai.gov.in and click on Check Aadhaar & Bank Account Linking Status in the Aadhaar Services section.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and the security code displayed on the screen and then click on send OTP.
- An OTP (one-time password) will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter that OTP and click on Login.
- If your Aadhaar linking is done then it will show Congratulations! Your Bank Aadhaar Mapping has been done along with your bank name and linking date.
