Money obviously plays a large role in our lives, but is it a good thing or a bad thing?  Would the world be a better place without it? This article talks about Is Money Good or Evil? Are Rich People Bad?

Is Money Good or Evil?

We all agree that Money is necessary. It is not possible to kick this Money away from our lives. How would you eat? How would you get new clothes, mobile?  It means going back to the Stone Age?! Relocating to a forest and live with nature. Do we want to do it?

Money is useful as a means of exchange, and something must be given worth in order that people can dependably “trade” goods and services. Otherwise, you are literally trading goods and services which we know if very inefficient way to live.

So we agree that Money is Necessary? Right! As we said in our Instagram post, shown below.

What Money Can or Can't buy

What Money Can or Can’t buy

Let’s talk about some other questions

Is knife Good or bad? In the hand of the surgeon it saves a life, in the hand of the murderer, it takes life. Is Knife responsible or the person using it?

If there is an accident by a car who is responsible for it – the car or the person driving it?

Is Science Good or Bad?

Where would we be without science? Science makes our life easy Without science there would be no electricity, no internet, no running water in taps, no studying of the stars. We would not have a paper to write on, or toothpaste to brush our teeth. Today, we live longer than ever before thanks to pharmaceutical, medical, and health science. Vaccines save many lives. Physics and electronics have given us satellites, telecommunications, and the Internet. You would not read this blog without them. Chemistry and biology have provided us with food.

Science created the atomic bomb and many people died. Global warming is noticeable throughout the world. Since science is connected to technology, people are inventing so many types of machine guns, war gadgets, etc which led to the loss of lives of innocent people.

It’s not as if Money has a mind of its own. It’s a tool, like a knife, like a car.

Everything depends on the person who uses it. While gives the power which brings greediness But it can help many people.

Bill Gates, among the top three richest men in the world, has been spending his enormous wealth, through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which he started with his wife. As of the end of 2016, the charitable foundation had given away $41.3 billion in grants and currently has the largest endowment of any private foundation in the U.S. The Gates Foundation funds everything from malaria prevention in Mozambique to smoking cessation in China to college costs for kids in the U.S.

Think about this, if there was no money, what would drive a farmer to grow food for people? What would cause every farmer to want to work hard from sunrise to sunset for people they don’t know if there was no reward in it for them? What would drive anybody to get up and go to work all day? Without money, society would break down and we would go back to living in the wild.

Are Rich People Bad?

What do you feel about Rich People? Let’s be honest? We think of Rich people as greedy and shallow. They get rich by taking advantage of others. They are miserly and selfish. Money is their god. They don’t really care about the poor or less fortunate.

If you carry the belief that money is bad and rich people are evil, chances are that you developed during this childhood as you try to make sense of money’s role in the world. At some point in your life, you learned either through hearing the family, friends or through movies, shows or experience that some people take advantage of others on their way to accumulating wealth.  However, when this stereotype is applied to all wealthy people, and money is seen as bad in itself, it can become self-limiting.

Think Steve Jobs and iPhone. Steve didn’t become rich because he sold just one iPhone. He became rich because he figured out how to sell iPhones to millions of people across every continent of the world.

Those wealthy people usually are running businesses and providing thousands of work for people. Amazon employs a more than half a million people, yes half a million people, and plans to hire thousands more. And how does Jeff Bezos, one who started Amazon and is the richest man in the world, spends his day. Jeff Bezos wakes up without an alarm, washes dishes after dinner, and has a soft spot for ‘Star Trek’

And while one might argue that they aren’t fully paying their fair share, they are paying multiple millions of dollars in taxes. Almost all these people got wealthy by taking chances, being innovative and working smarter and harder than the competition. They are in a position to use that capital to make more wealth and buy products to further that process.

While there is a lot of bashing of rich people, most of it comes from jealousy. They have what everyone else wants and don’t have to that extent. If they’re such a bad group, why does everyone want to be in their shoes?

Atlas Shrugged: Is Money the root of all evil?

The question was beautifully answered by writer Ayn Rand in her book Atlas Shrugged which was published in 1957. A 1000 pages book  “to show how desperately the world needs prime movers and how viciously it treats them” and to portray “what happens to the world without them. Atlas Shrugged is one the both in terms of the number of pages with small font and philosophy and is famous for people not finishing the book.

Our article Atlas Shrugged: Story, Positives and Negatives discuss it in detail.

Page 387 is a scene of a party where many rich people have gathered including Francisco d’Anconia. Francisco d’Anconia is one of the central characters in Atlas Shrugged, and owner by inheritance of the world’s largest copper mining empire. He is a childhood friend, and the first love of Dagny Taggart, the protagonist of the novel. Quotes from his speech are given below. The entire speech you, can read here.

Have you ever asked what is the root of money?

Money rests on the axiom that every man is the owner of his mind and his effort.

Money is a tool of exchange, which can’t exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?

Money demands that you sell, not your weakness to men’s stupidity, but your talent to their reason; it demands that you buy, not the shoddiest they offer, but the best your money can find

When you accept money in payment for your effort, you do so only on the conviction that you will exchange it for the product of the effort of others

Wealth is the product of man’s capacity to think. Then is money made by the man who invents a motor at the expense of those who did not invent it? Is money made by the intelligent at the expense of the fools? By the able at the expense of the incompetent? By the ambitious at the expense of the lazy? Money is MADE—before it can be looted or mooched—made by the effort of every honest man, each to the extent of his ability. An honest man is one who knows that he can’t consume more than he has produced.

But money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driverIt will give you the means for the satisfaction of your desires, but it will not provide you with desires. Money is the scourge of the men who attempt to reverse the law of causality—the men who seek to replace the mind by seizing the products of the mind.

Money will not purchase happiness for the man who has no concept of what he wants; money will not give him a code of values, if he’s evaded the knowledge of what to value, and it will not provide him with a purpose, if he’s evaded the choice of what to seek.

The money will not buy intelligence for the fool, or admiration for the coward, or respect for the incompetent.

If an heir is equal to his money, it serves him; if not, it destroys himBut you look on and you cry that money corrupted him. Did it? Or did he corrupt his money

But money demands of you the highest virtues, if you wish to make it or to keep it. Men who have no courage, pride, or self-esteem, men who have no moral sense of their right to their money and are not willing to defend it as they defend their life, men who apologize for being rich—will not remain rich for long.

If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose—because it contains all the others—the fact that they were the people who created the phrase ‘to MAKE money.’ No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity—to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favour. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created. The words ‘to make money’ hold the essence of human morality.
